According to John McCarthy, it is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It is related to the similar task of using computers to understand human intelligence.  2004  paper  (PDF, 106 KB)  [ https://www-formal.stanford.edu/jmc/whatisai.pdf]  Types of AI 1) Weak AI: It is also called narrow AI or Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) trained and focussed to perform some specific tasks for example it enables applications such as Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa, IBM Watson, and autonomous vehicles. But how can we believe such probably absurd claims? The operationalist viewpoint is that "the computer thinks  if it acts indistinguishably from the way a hum...

CAN A COMPUTER HAVE A MIND? (From Sir Roger Penrose's The Emperor's New Mind) The Emperor's New Mind by Sir Roger Penrose was published in its original form in 1989. Before that and since then, science, technology and engineering have taken a giant leap. Humans have devised complicated and sophisticated devices and machines that completely negate human physical limitations. These  machines can drop us from one  part of the world to another or even from one planet to another; some can lift objects which otherwise would require hundreds or thousands of men power, and some propel us at such speeds on the ground. These machines and devices have made our lives easier, and aid us remain connected  while living thousands of miles apart. Can "mind" be associated or compared with the sophisticated devices that humans have so cleverly devised? In this introductory chapter, the writer pens down the following questions: What is a mind? What does it mean to think or feel? Do ...

WHAT IS QUANTUM MIND? The quantum mind or quantum consciousness is a group of hypotheses proposing that classical mechanics cannot explain consciousness. It posits that quantum-mechanical phenomena, such as entanglement and superposition, may play an important part in the brain's function and could explain consciousness; and that t here is something micro-physical quantum mechanical about the brain.  Classical mechanics   is a physical theory which  describes the motion of macroscopic  objects, such as projectiles,  parts of machinery  and astronomical objects , like spacecraft, planets, stars  and galaxies . For objects governed by classical mechanics, if the present state is known, it is possible to predict how it will move in the future (determinism), and how it has moved in the past (reversibility). (Classical Mechanics (Goldstein) and Classical Mechanics (Kibble and Berkshire) Classical mechanics meant determinism, where...

POVERTY AND MENTAL HEALTH

Image
https://www.apa.org/topics/socioeconomic-status/poverty-hunger-homelessness-children contd.... Chronic Poverty and P sychological health consequences Children growing up in toxic environmental conditions tend to develop behavioral and mental health issues, which continue to persist in their entire life. Poverty leads to mental health and developmental problems that in turn prevent individuals and families from leaving poverty, creating a vicious, intergenerational cycle of poverty and poor health. Children fail to develop to their full "genetic potential" not just because of the deficiency of the basic needs but also because of the environment both at home and outside (social deprivation) the deficiency has given rise to. Chronic and acute stressful life events exposure, lead to hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis changes, and other brain circuit changes for example, language processing and executive functioning. POVERTY AND MENTAL HEALTH

https://borgenproject.org/mental-health-and-poverty-in-india/ Abstract This research paper tries to examine the relationship between poverty and mental health problems. The mental health of individuals is shaped by the social, environmental and economic condition in which they are born, grow, work and age. Poverty and deprivation are key determinants of children's social and behavioral development and adult mental health. The causal role of stressful life events associated with poverty appears to be a significant risk factor in a wide range of psychological illnesses. (Poverty and mental health policy, practice and research implications by Lee Knifton and Greig Inglis BJPsych Bull. 2020 Oct; 44(5): 193-196. doi:10.1192/bjb.2020.78;  file://Users/admin/Documents/Poverty%20and%20mental%20health:%20policy,%20practice%20reseach %20implications.webarchive) Poverty and Mental Health Psychological illnesses are multifactorial; but poverty is one of the major risk factors that affect menta...
